The DCH Health System knows the importance of sports in the life of a child. That’s why we’re pleased to sponsor the second annual DCH SportsMedicine Dirt, Sweat & Gears Trail Duathlon on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Lake Lurleen State Park. The event will feature a 10-mile trail bike ride followed by a 5K run on the trails at Lake Lurleen.
Following a mandatory pre-race meeting planned for 7:00 a.m., the bike portion will begin at 7:30 a.m. Registration fee is $45 for individuals and $80 for a team prior to race day and $55 individual and $90 team on race day. (The minimum age for the bike trail is 11.) If you are strong on the bike but not an avid runner, or vice versa, this duathlon also allows for team competition. Awards will be given in several individual and team categories, door prizes, and participants who collect donations will be eligible to win additional prizes depending on the amount of money collected.
NOTE: There is a $4 per person fee to enter the park, so please be prepared to pay the park attendant that morning.
Racers will start in waves from the South Trailhead/Pavilion 1 and go north on the Park Road to the North Trailhead for a distance of 1 mile. The single track portion of the bike course starts on the Tashka Trail and then turns RIGHT at the second entrance onto the Ridge Loop. This takes racers in a clockwise direction on the 4 mile Ridge Loop. Upon intersecting with the Tashka Trail competitors turn RIGHT and then almost immediately turn RIGHT again on the Ridge Loop for lap 2. Upon completing lap 2 of the Ridge Loop the course turns LEFT at the Tashka Trail intersection, re-traces the short section of the Tashka Trail, and then continues downhill to the Park Road turning LEFT for a 1 mile return to the South Trailhead/Pavilion 1 (Start/Finish). Racers will then enter the transition area to begin the 5K trail run portion of event.
(There will NOT be an aid station on the bike course.)
Upon leaving the transition area competitors start the run by going SOUTH on the Lakeside Trail to a turnaround point where the single track joins the double track section of the Lakeside Trail (i.e. the road that goes across the dam). This is the aid station for the run AND the run turnaround point. The total distance on this out and back course is approximately 5K.
Racers will complete the event when they cross the final timing mat at the Start/Finish.
